In my artwork I am trying to strike a balance between history and entropy, both of objects and how those objects are reflected in our thoughts. By investigating the history of the materials and processes involved in the creation of objects, we can come to a deeper understanding of those objects and their meaning in our lives; by observing the inevitable decay over time, we can place ourselves in the universe.
For most of human history, steel (or food, for that matter) was something that was made, not purchased – or it was bought from the producer directly. Since we have shifted to an urban industrial culture, we have lost many of the connections between ourselves and the things we are surrounded with. By starting from the gathering of iron ore in my creation of steel objects, and following the process through, I hope to gain some insight into how these connections are made and broken.
